In 2005 that HUNT co-authored a book entitled ‘Direct Democracy’. It said that the NHS "fails to meet public expectations" and is "no longer relevant in the 21st century”. It called for the NHS to be replaced by a new system of health provision in which people would pay money into personal health accounts, which they could then use to shop around for care from public and private providers. Similar to the USA. On 11th. March 2015 just before the General election when all the polls suggested that the Tories would lose, the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt signed one of the biggest privatisation contracts in the history of the NHS worth £780m. He wanted to ensure that these were in place before the election. The sales to a total of 11 private firms, some with dubious records, are intended to help hospitals tackle the backlog of patients waiting for surgery and tests. The companies involved are:- • Circle Health Ltd [large donors to the Tory Party. Recently pulled out of the contract to run the NHS Hinchingbrooke Hospital due to repeated failure to meet standards] • Alliance Medical Ltd [also in January 2015 awarded a 10-year contract to run scans across Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Liverpool, and Lancashire despite the fact that the NHS Trust that runs Royal Stoke University Hospital in Staffordshire put together a consortium with other NHS hospitals to enter what they called a “competitive bid”]. • Care UK Clinical Services Ltd [large donors to the Tory Party. Had NHS contracts on 2 care homes suspended due to poor standard.] • Vanguard Healthcare Solutions [recently sacked by Musgrove Park Hospital in Somerset for incompetence in performing eye surgery. Is facing legal action] Colbalt Unit Appeal Fund Diagnostic World Ltd Inhealth Ltd Medical Imaging Partnership Ltd Nuffield Health Ramsay Health Care UK Regents Park Cardiovascular Solutions JEREMY HUNT TRACK RECORD In 2009, Hunt had to repay £9,500 of taxpayers’ cash in claims for his second home expenses. In 2010, Hunt gave a civil service job to the daughter of a friend, a Conservative Lord who’d been the director of one of Hunt’s companies. In 2010, as Sports Minister Hunt blamed ‘hooligans’ for the 1989 Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans died, a third of them children or teenagers. In 2010, Hunt was caught hiding behind a tree trying to avoid being spotted going into a private dinner with the Murdoch’s. In 2012, Hunt and his advisors were caught leaking sensitive information to Rupert Murdoch’s office when Hunt was supposed to be handling the company’s bid to take over BSkyB. In 2012, Hunt was caught dodging more than £100,000 in tax in a property deal. In 2012, Hunt was in charge of the Olympics security fiasco, in which he paid millions of taxpayers’ money to private company G4S who were so incompetent the army and police had to step in. In 2013, the British Medical Association said Hunt displayed “complete ignorance” after saying he thought the abortion limit should be changed to 12 weeks. In 2013, Hunt used £4,000 of taxpayers’ money to pay for language lessons so he could learn his Chinese lover’s language.

Just a quick note to say LA-aside, my travels are going well. Undecided whether I will do a solo group tour again but I guess that decision is weighed against how badly I want to go to said destination/whether I can be bothered to organise transfers and internal flights etc in another language. Rio is amazing, Uruguay and Paraguay were surprise late additions and I can´t wait to come back to South America again. Leaving for Vancouver tomorrow :)

I am a redhead again and I absolutely love it. It is L!ve so it is fading to pink. Just as well I am only seeing patients tomorrow. I'll be at the conference in Devon this week and [personal profile] annifa is kindly hosting me for one night. So much to tell you but none of it uber-exciting. Just pleasant stuff to counteract the badness.

I also found a nice house to live in - £390pcm (all bills excl gas and elec) - the other housemate is away 6 days out of 7. She is 65 or something but that doesn't bother me. She is v.clean and tidy. And fifteen minutes bus ride to work <3

..has been a productive month. Two conferences, one training day, one exam organised and conducted, really good appraisal from my boss and audit project off the ground. Regretfully I can't sit my exit exam this year as two of my colleagues will be doing so.

My birthday oncall weekend started off rubbishly as my OOH colleague called in sick. I was covering both her duties and mine when my boss felt sorry for me and called his friends to take her weekend duties over. Consequently the weekend improved. Friday, the juniors bought me a b'day cake. The night reg came in with Lancome Juicy Tubes for me. Jiexing and I went out for a drink. Saturday saw Ed, Richard and myself pop out for beer and gin. Sunday I had McD's breakfast with Noush, Zak's chicken with the juniors for lunch (my treat) and Indian for dinner with Ed, Richard and Jiexing. Successful weekend when you get on with the rest.

I celebrated my b'day with the family on 16/2 - tasty Chinese meal. My brother got me a gorgeous Chanel purse, my sister a DKNY work bag and my mum diamonds. My dad is yet to buy his present. I celebrated the end of the oncall weekend with a spa day, followed by waxing and hair colour - semi gloss and blow dry. I also had lunch for one and tried home waxing with minimal success. I'm looking forward to my b'day tea and pubcrawl this weekend and the fun and games that lie in March (oncall weekend, 2 trips to Manchester for exams/courses, acute medicine day, two gigs - Damage and RNB allstars and a hen do to plan).

Any of you got home waxing or Copenhagen tips? They're my two projects atm - my abstracts got accepted at the European Endocrine Conference and work gave me clearance to go :)
Saj is in Japan. Overall verdict - pleasant but disappointing. Positives - food。

HAVE YOUR PERIODS STOPPED?

Are you a women aged 18-40, who has not had a period AND is not taking contraceptive medication for the last 4 months?

At Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals in West London, we are trying to understand how periods are controlled by studying the effects of a natural hormone called Kisspeptin-54 which all healthy people need to be fertile.

We think understanding more about it could help us find better ways to treat fertility problems in the future.

You would need to attend 4 visits lasting 8 hours each, and would receive £500 expenses.

Please contact Risheka Ratnasabapathy for information: kisspeptin@imperial.ac.uk or 07530 973811.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to commence my zillionth post with the announcement that Priya Basil (a personal friend of mine) has had her debut novel nominated for the World Book Day's 'Top Ten Books'. Priya's debut, called 'Ishq and Mushq'  has made it into the final ten books on the shortlist to find 'The Book to Talk About' for 2008.

The top ten have now entered the next stage of the process - voting recommences on these from scratch. After the final round, the winning author gets £5,000 and lots of exposure.

It'd be super-amazing for such a gifted lady to receive this prize and the rewards that come with it.

Go here and register your vote - your support will be immensely appreciated :D

"I’ve just had an email informing me that prominent journalist Tasneem Khalil has been arrested by the military police in Bangladesh, a serious attack on press freedom in the country. An editor and outspoken journalist for the English daily newspaper Daily Star, he also worked for CNN and Human Rights Watch in the country. Of late he has been documenting the military’s attempts to take over Bangladesh and restrict political rights and free speech in the country.

'Apparently Mr. Khalil’s crime is that he did his job. He spoke truthfully about the current situation in Bangladesh. He was interviewed by Nora Boustany of the Washington Post last month - that interview may have cost him his freedom and now possibly his life.

I have been speaking out over the last month about the military takedown of the democratic system in Bangladesh. One by one the fundamental rights of Bangladeshis have been taken away. But, Bangladeshis have recently started to fight back against the military. The press, the people and the courts have begun speaking out. The military now aims to silence them. Their thuggery is now plain to see.'

Human Rights Watch has also issued a press release. This has also been elevated to the US State dept and Washington Post should be doing a story.

We need to organise joint protests in Washington and London in front of the Bangladeshi embassies to raise the profile of this arrest and highlight human rights abuses there. Who’s with me? Email sunny@pickledpolitics.com if you're interested.

EDIT - thanks to everyone that's helped - Tasnim has been FREED :D

Finalists.

...the idiosyncratic routine of lecture courses at Charing X Hospital will soon be over.

I'm not especially bothered about the lack of teaching material come the summer - it's the cosy social routine and lack of days with casual clothes that I'll be mourning somewhat more!

The last two years have seen me become better friends with a number of girlies (and token boy who has gained 'honorary girl status') in our year. I seem to have rotated placements with the same few, so I get really excited about seeing them (as we're all on our own this year) :D

This 'block' will mark the end of the Reynolds hot chocolates we have at breaktimes, in addition to their toasted sandwiches (I can never get mine to caramelise that well), surly Lithuanian cashier and empty vending machines (empty to me 'cos they eat my money or choose not to possess what I want). Sooner or later our names will join the thousand scribbled on the walls and ceiling - the scribble of a newly-qualified doctor will be marker-penned for posterity. Fingers crossed mine will be up there too. Someday. Somehow.

We'll also be ending the Cafe du Fleur/Whole Hog sandwich routine, in addition to the Puzzle/OSP drinks after work (admittedly, the number and alcohol content of drinks is going down as people get closer to exams). Starbucks gossip sessions are already fewer and far between.

I'd like to think that Hammersmith is going to be a lonely place without us. Somehow, I think not - the year below have already got themselves an equivalent gang or ten, so this rabble is going to live for a long time yet!

Aaagh! LJ ate my entry up.

In point form:

Holidays are great - I've not moaned for ten days, and if I have - it's been results anxiety & the weather (too hot!).
Rebels & Martyrs at the National Gallery is ace - it's nice to see something in thematic rather than chronological/stylistic order.
Neal's Yard are too expensive but their pumpkin & polenta pie is gorgeous to take-away!
The Fabian Society have lots of interesting things to say; shame Sajid Khan MP's talk didn't offer anything new.
K-Bar is a great place to people watch; so, so many posers! Won't be going back since I'm slightly offended by the Buddhist imagery being treated with contempt.
The Crabtree is a great place to drink - perhaps a river [profile] londonpubcrawl would be a plan @ some point?
Make a point of going to The Glass Bar - it's ace.
I met someone I wanted to rant at but kept my mouth shut.
I also met someone I fancied, so all was not lost.

More on the last week/so can be found here.

Got a wedding on Saturday & RHCP + Channel 4 next week. Will also be moving out, so housewarming details will be out soon :D

Great political/social world-cup themed quiz can be found here :D

Determined, intoxicating, resourceful and stereotypically middle-class – you only need to spend a matter of minutes at medical school before you meet an ‘Ana’ or a ‘Mia’. Romantic and feminine these names may be, but things aren’t what they seem – a significant minority of ladies who appear successful and talented amidst our incestuous fishbowl are keeping a very dirty secret. Their secret commands and compels out of choice; the choice to equate weightlessness with godliness.

Welcome to the darkly exclusive web called pro-active anorexia. Preferring to be seen as a social movement which serves to define anorexia as a lifestyle choice, the movement concentrates on self-control and discipline in order to better the self. Providing a sharp contrast to the professional view of the condition as a disease or a disorder, ‘Pro-Ana’ defines itself as a proactive ‘choice’, differing from the reactionary behaviour of eating disorder anorectics. Followers are inspired to initiate from within themselves, without needing to maintain ‘internal control’ as a psychological coping device in response to some external event or stimulus. They thrive on the challenge of getting the human body to respond to will; a task they feel must be completed before turning their iron will to better the rest of the world. Pro-Ana’s see themselves as a power to be reckoned with. ‘Victim’ is a dirty word.

It’s your birthday. You’re planning a bash to celebrate your three and twenty years of existence on Mothership Earth. Cue the invite list. Best friends – check. People you fancy – check. Mates from home – check.

We then get round to firm buddies and colleagues. In correct parlance, a person of good taste should exercise the right to invite exactly whom they want to their extra-curricular personal occasions. When it comes to firms, things get political. You see the same set of faces every day for a year. Chances are you don’t like one of your placement partners. Chances are that nobody you know is able to tolerate this particular person on social and anti-social levels, a few snide sympathisers with popularity agendas aside. Fate looks likely that they’ll get bitchy if you don’t invite them. Do you suck it up, invite them anyway and injure your pride? Decision-time!

With advancing age, it's unsurprising to find yourself surrounded by siblings getting married whilst their friends are having babies. The offshoot of these exercises is unfortunate: myriad sneaky little children circling around your kneecaps, smiling sweetly whilst they ask you to check the spelling on their latest offering for Santa. It’s not unusual to find yourself composing your own sweet ministration to the hairy man in Lapland, before marvelling at the sheer audacity of the aforementioned short people for asking for the replica Mclaren F1 and the latest Xbox.

Let's take things back in time, to an era where you'd have found yourself kicking things off with the obligatory ‘Dear Santa’ following it up with a sorry tale of exactly how good a little boy/girl you’ve been. Nowadays, it’s more common to take the tone of Kylie, telling ‘Santa baby’ to ‘hurry down the chimney tonight’, whilst adding lashings of lust and smatterings of seduction in the process. I, for one, have been known to add Maybelline Pink Diamond kisses along with a 30’s style squirt of parfum before passing it on to the Royal Mail. I’ve never had one of my efforts go unrewarded, which tells you one thing – that the seven deadly sins will never do you wrong. Everybody likes a little depravity, regardless of whether they admit to it or not, starting off with Pope Gregory the Great!

The founder of the Seven Deadly Sins couldn’t wait to get in on the act. He reduced the original list, compiled by Evagrius, to the seven items we know today. Pope Gregory ranked the Sins' based on the degree from which they offended against love. Want to see how they’re a help rather than a hindrance?

Pride is defined as excessive belief in one's own abilities. No bad thing when you’re taught to project an aura of confidence in order to compete with the head girls of yesteryear, but it may get troublesome in extreme cases where it interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God, especially when you find yourself sitting on the wrong side of a resit-appeal panel! More commonly known as vanity, it’s an essential token for getting into the more coveted institutions of medical school life, student union or consultant alike.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. It’s more commonly found among the less good-looking and the less sporting among us who wouldn’t have had a chance under the old PRHO selection procedure.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires. Since fat people are a ridiculed minority at medical school, it goes without saying that the avarice extends to textbooks and past papers. It’s not what you know it’s who you know ;)

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body. It helps to follow the advice of nurses and shag upwards, not downwards. I best stop lusting after the third years then.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath. Confrontation is something the less popular among us should avoid, given the predilection for gossiping and bitching in the medical school. It goes without saying that this power is for the revered and the beautiful.

Greed is defined the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. What else explains the proliferation of medics with promotions companies? And the disappearance of textbooks before the term, let alone the relevant course, has started? Let’s not forget the number of good-looking third year females who start dating the less attractive F1’s and F2’s; these guys are in no way, shape or form responsible for their assessment, and boy do these girls know it! I’m confident that ninety percent of the city-breaks taken by the medical school population are precipitated by the class-nerds attempting to buy love.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. If you can get through medical school whilst training yourself as an expert in this, I salute you. NB, it may help to get past-paper gluttony on your side – the best way to do this is by taking part in as many medical school activities as you can. You can meet someone who falls for your dubious charms (there’s always one!) and cram your way to success. There’s hope for even the ugliest member of the year group here, since one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.

The world is your oyster, and you shall not want. Follow our lead and you won’t go too far wrong. Just don’t get caught in public with the treasure resembling a poster-doll for ugly fetish – ridicule is a step too far, and you won’t be able to live it down. Capische?
